In today’s world, problems arise every day. Some of them can be really terrible, such as war, poverty and world hunger. Although these are all extremely destructive to our planet, they aren’t the only risks we face. There are other global issues of the same significance but not of the same scale that are also a risk to our planet. One of the easiest to combat is today’s topic, waste. So, what can we, ordinary people, do to solve this problem?
Firstly, we need to identify the problem and the causes of it. Waste in our cities is most likely to be found on the ground rather than where it should be. A large amount of this waste is made up of materials like aluminium, paper and plastic that can be recycled. What is the problem with that you may ask? These materials are not biodegradable. This means that they neither disintegrate like food waste nor are absorbed by the soil. If we don’t take action, this kind of waste will stack up in the streets of our towns and cities, polluting them as a result and harming the environment. Having considered what could happen if we don’t deal with the issue of waste, let’s move on to the solutions to this problem.
One important solution to the issue of waste is recycling. It is important because it allows us to turn waste into something that can be used again. There are a few things to remember, though, when recycling. Firstly, we must remember to put the correct waste in the corresponding dustbin. For instance, putting recyclable materials such as paper, plastic and aluminium in blue bins and not regular dustbins for normal waste. Also, under no circumstances should non-recyclable materials be thrown in blue bins. As this will cause the whole load to be dumped in a normal landfill site.
Apart from paper, plastic and aluminium, a lot of other items can be recycled. Glass for example, has its own specific dustbin. It is an enormous, round shaped dustbin, designed in a way that when you throw glass in it, it doesn’t shatter. Secondly, we should take care to recycle electrical waste properly. Batteries for example need to be recycled properly because they can prove to be really harmful for the environment due to the chemicals which are inside them. This is the reason why they have their own special bins just for batteries.
Lastly, food waste can easily be recycled also. We can use a special dustbin called a composter. With it, and the help of some worms, uneaten fruit and vegetables and their peels can be turned into compost, a kind of fertiliser.
All in all, recycling is a perfect solution for the pollution problem our planet faces. Provided that everyone does their part to help, we can make the world a better place. Simply throwing your waste in different coloured dustbins might not seem to have any serious impact on you, but in reality, it is a world changing act.
